Make sure to brush all surfaces of your teeth, including the back molars.
2. Floss daily: Brushing alone does not remove all food particles and plaque between your teeth. It’s important to floss daily to clean these hard-to-reach areas. Take around 18 inches of dental floss and then wrap it around your fingers, gently moving it up and down between each tooth.
3. Limit sugary and acidic foods: When oral bacteria consume sugar, they create an acid that can break down tooth enamel and cause decay. Try limiting your intake of both sugary and acidic foods like candy, soda, and citrus fruits. If you do consume them, make sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward.
4. Drink plenty of water: Water washes away any food particles and bacteria from your teeth, preventing plaque build-up. It also neutralizes the acid in your mouth from sugary or acidic foods.
5. Chew sugar-free gum after meals: Like drinking water, the natural saliva produced by chewing sugar-free gum removes food particles and balances the mouth’s acidity.
6. Use mouthwash: Mouthwash kills bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. Look for a fluoride-based mouthwash and use it after brushing and flossing.
7. Visit the dentist regularly: Regular dental check-ups are critical for preventing problems like periodontal disease and tooth decay. Your dentist can catch the earliest signs of decay and provide effective treatment before it becomes more serious. They may also recommend additional preventive measures like sealants or fluoride varnish treatments.
